A filter that automatically marks all newly received messages as "read" should be removed.

Probably have a filter somewhere set up to automatically read your emails.  Click on the gear icon (settings) in the top right-hand corner of Gmail, then on "view all settings" and "filters and blocked addresses". Select the filter configured to read your messages and click delete.
